SPORTS: Liverpool 2-2 Manchester City (agg 3 - 2) Carling Cup

Liverpool booked their first Wembley appearance since 1996 as they edged out Manchester City in the Carling Cup semi-final at Anfield.

Nigel de Jong's spectacular goal for City put City front 1-0 and 1-1 on aggregate but soon changed when Liverpool drew level before the interval through Steven Gerrard's hotly-contested penalty, awarded after Micah Richards deflected Daniel Agger's shot onto his own arm.

Edin Dzeko's close-range strike once again sparked anxiety around Anfield, but the outstanding Craig Bellamy had the last word against his former club, sliding home a cleverly crafted strike with 16 minutes left.

SPORTS: Barcelona 2-2 Real Madrid (agg 4-3) Copa del Rey

Barcelona survived a late fightback by Real Madrid to secure their passage through to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey with a 4-3 aggregate win.
Leading 2-1 from the first leg, Lionel Messi jinked through the Madrid defence to find Pedro, who slotted in before Dani Alves earned a three-goal cushion.

Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed one back from close range before Karim Benzema brought the sides level on the night.

Sergio Ramos was shown a red card for an elbow on Sergio Busquets late on.

Azerbaijan take on Burj Khalifa to plan world’s tallest tower

A Azerbaijan developer has unveiled plans to build the world’s tallest building, eclipsing Dubai’s 828m-tall Burj Khalifa by a full 27 percent.

Property company Avesta said the 1050m superscraper would form part of a chain of 41 artificial islands in the Caspian Sea, with construction scheduled to start in late 2013.

The tower would also bypass the Prince Alwaleed-backed Kingdom Tower, the 1,000m building set to begin construction in Jeddah in the first quarter.

Avesta’s marketing director told Associated Press the tower had initially been designed at 560m, but had nearly doubled under the latest version of the development.

The superscraper will house a business centre at the heart of the Khazar Islands project, to be located 15 miles south of the Azerbaijan capital Baku, Kana Guluzade told the newswire.

Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, named the world’s tallest tower following its launch in 2010, has seen a number of developers announce plans to eclipse its 828m height.

The most recent, the $1.2bn Kingdom Tower, is being designed by Chicago-based design firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. Smith was also the architect behind the Burj Khalifa.

Kingdom Tower is set to be constructed in three phases over five years. It will be located in the first phase of Kingdom City, a 5.3m mixed-use development north of Jeddah, which overlooks the Red Sea and Obhur Creek.

On completion, the tower will include a Four Seasons hotel, apartments, offices, three lobbies on the upper floors and the world’s highest observation deck on the 157th level.

David Beckham: "I never wanted to become famous"

Imagine a world without David Beckham? We would be living in a Becks-less existence because as the man himself reveals, he never intended to become a celebrity.

“I never wanted to be famous,” David tells Men’s Health. “I was never interested in anything else apart from becoming a footballer.”

David also admits that he no plans to retire from playing football just yet. Which is fairly obviously as he’s just renewed his contract with his team LA Galaxy. However, David confesses that as he’s getting older he’s had to change the way he plays.

“I know what my limits are, what I can achieve and which passes I can play,” says Becks. “So that’s been my game over the last few years: I have adapted to my age, different situations and the position that I’m playing in.

“I still love playing; I still love being part of a team. Right now I’m not even thinking about retiring.”
